Sisters of Christ
Our Convent, the Sisters of Christ is based just along from the Church at 11 London Road, ME10 1NQ
(01795 428744).
(History)
In 1892, The Sisters of the Nativity, a Sisterhood of Religious Women, who had at that time, all their convents in France, considered opening a house in England. on 5 October 1894 a small group of Sisters took possession of the property known as Schamel, and opened their Convent. The Convent School grew over the years. In 1904 a new teaching block was built behind the old house and away from the noise of the road. Further building work took place in the 30's 40's and 50's. In 1923 there were 107 pupils in the school and a similar number in 1939, but by 1982 there were over 400 on the register. From the earliest days both Catholic and Non-Catholic pupils were received from abroad, from Sittingbourne, from neighbouring Parishes and from all over Britain. The Convent was always a fee paying school, but the Sisters always kept the fees to a minimum in order to receive as many of the children of the parish as possible. No Catholic child was ever turned away because the parents could not afford the school fees. The Convent School closed in the 1990's and the Sisters are now based at 11 London Road.
