Inspired by faith and the example of St Vincent de Paul, the Society brings people together in friendship to support those in need.

The Society was founded in 1833 by a group of students in Paris.

They were challenged to serve the poor of the city and, inspired by the example of St Vincent de Paul, they served the local population face to face as part of their spiritual formation.

The Society in Britain

SERVING SINCE 1844

The work of the Society soon spread beyond France, reaching Britain in the nineteenth century.

A Tradition of Service

1833: The Society was founded by a group of students in Paris.

1844: A group of men came together in London and started the first group in Britain.

From those beginnings, the Society has continued its tradition of meeting people face to face and providing practical support, friendship and care to those who need it.

Serving others face to face, with friendship, compassion and practical support.
