Spring Plenary 2022 Resolution – Extract from “An invitation from the Bishops of England and Wales”
Attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days is the greatest of all privileges, sometimes referred to as “the Sunday Obligation.”
Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, until the present time, we have shared with you our judgment that the situation of the last two years has meant that the Sunday Obligation has been impeded and has needed to be fulfilled in other ways. We thank God that this situation has now changed. The pressing challenges of the pandemic have lessened significantly. Most people have resumed the wide range of normal activities, no longer restricted by the previous Covid measures. We therefore believe that the reasons which have prevented Catholics from attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation no longer apply.
We understand there will still be some members of our congregations who, for reasons of health, do not feel safe enough to return to Mass. It has always been the understanding of the Church that when the freedom of any Catholic to attend Mass in person is impeded for a serious reason, because of situations such as ill health, care for the sick or legitimate fear, this is not a breach of the Sunday Obligation.
In the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Lord’s Supper, the Lord Jesus entrusted to us the precious gift of Himself. With humility, we glory in being a Eucharistic people for whom attendance at Mass is essential. Looking forward to the forthcoming feast of Pentecost, we now invite all Catholics who have not yet done so to return to attending Mass in person.

CORONAVIRUS PRECAUTIONS
UPDATED ANTI-COVID-19 GUIDANCE AGREED BY PUBLIC HEALTH ENGLAND AND THE BISHOPS CONFERENCE OF ENGLAND AND WALES (24 February 2022) – SUMMARISED AS FOLLOWS:
- Vaccines are encouraged but people with Covid will no longer be legally required to self-isolate, BUT guidance recommends for those who test positive to stay at home and avoid contact with others for at least 5 days and in consideration for other Parishioners we would ask that you do this.
- We will be maintaining the one way system currently in place. Please collect your hymn books and mass books as you enter and leave them on the bench nearest the exit at the side door as you leave.
- Transmission is through oral and nasal aerosol therefore the wearing of masks is encouraged but not mandatory.
- Sanitising hands is still on offer but readers don not need to use before reading.
- You are requested to not allow Children to wander around the church for their own protection and other people’s safety
- Holy water is now being used
- There is no need for social distancing but please be mindful of others.
- There is no need for bench cleaning between services.
- Good ventilation still recommended
- The Offertory Procession will be take place when music is available, with those involved sanitising their hands immediately before they touch the sacred vessel or other gifts
- The Holy Communion will continue to be under one kind and the Minister will continue to wear a face covering and it is permitted to announce “the Body of Christ” for each communicant. Clergy and extra-ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should sanitize hands before distributing the Blessed Sacrament. Communion is recommended to be distributed in the hands, but if people wish to receive on the tongue, then they should wait until the end of the communion line and receive then. Communion on the tongue exposes the ministers’ hands to their aerosol and increases the possibility of viral infections. He will have to sanitize his hands again immediately after.

ARCHDIOCESE OF SOUTHWARK
SACRED HEART OF JESUS R. C. CHURCH
SITTINGBOURNE
INTRODUCTION
Pope Francis wants to hear from the whole Church about what is happening in local parishes. He and the bishops would like to know what individuals think we should all be doing to help make our parishes better. The way he has proposed doing this is a Synodal Process. Synod means “journeying together” and it involves listening to the Holy Spirit and to each other in order to discern the path we are called to walk together. The Synod "is intended to inspire people to dream about the Church we are called to be, to make people's hopes flourish, to stimulate trust, to bind up wounds, to weave new and deeper relationships, to learn from one another, to build bridges, to enlighten minds, warm hearts, and restore strength to our hands for our common mission.
PRAYER FOR THE SYNOD
We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name. With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts; Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it. We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder. Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions. Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right. All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever. Amen.
Communion - What are the ways in which your parish most successfully brings people together? What else can we do?
Participation - What do you think each of us can do and what can we do collectively would make our parish better?
Mission - Are we looking in or are we looking out, as a parish community? What and how can we do both effectively?
