Anointing of the Sick

The Anointing of the Sick is a Sacrament of healing, comfort and strength for those experiencing serious illness, declining health or the difficulties of old age.

Through the Anointing of the Sick, the Church entrusts those who are ill to the loving care of Christ.

The Sacrament offers spiritual strength, peace and courage and reminds those who are suffering that they are supported by the prayers and love of the Church.

Who Can Receive the Sacrament?

The Anointing of the Sick is for Catholics whose health is seriously affected by illness or old age. It may also be appropriate before a serious operation or when a person's health significantly worsens.

The Sacrament may be received more than once when circumstances require it.

Don't Wait Until the Last Moment

The Anointing of the Sick is not only for those who are approaching the end of their life.

Where possible, families are encouraged to contact the parish while the person who is ill is able to participate fully in the Sacrament.
